What is Pilates?
Invented by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s and considered revolutionary in its day, Pilates involves exercises that are subtle yet effective, and it and can achieve great results in posture and movement quality. It also differs from conventional conditioning classes by focussing on the deep stabilising muscles - building a solid foundation for a stronger body.
A gentle workout of stretching, strengthening and breathing exercises, which will help improve posture, develop agility and assist circulation.
Pilates is suitable for people of all ages and some classes are designed especially for the over 60's.
What are the benefits of Pilates?
Pilates is concerned with connecting mind and body, improving muscle strength, tone and flexibility, developing good posture and improving breathing. It is based on the theory that a few correctly executed exercises will produce benefits. It is particularly successful in the relief of back pain, neck pain or tension, and other problems that can be attributed to poor posture.
Exercising with Pilates promotes relaxation and reduces stress levels, helping to improve sleep patterns. It improves lung function and blood circulation, and will improve pelvic floor function thereby reducing the risk of injury and illness - in particular those affecting the neck, shoulders and back.
Pilates aims to correct poor muscle and postural balance, thereby restoring vitality to the body and mind. It can help to prevent injury, stress and strain when practised regularly and can help aid recovery from certain types of injury and illness, in particular those affecting the neck, shoulders and back.
Classes and Private Tuition
Classes are run on a course basis, as participants need to learn the basic principles before progression to more challenging exercises. Throughout your class, your instructor will offer modifications to the exercises to meet each individual's needs, thereby ensuring that no one is working to a level that is beyond their ability.
A beginner's course is taught on a one-to-one basis in a series of three one hour lessons with fees payable in advance. After this, you may join an existing studio class to continue your development. Class numbers are strictly limited. Should you miss one or more classes during a 'term', subject to availability, you will be offered an alternative class. This must be taken by the end of the current term. No refunds will be given.
Close fitting clothing is preferable for the class and all Pilates exercises are performed in either socks or bare feet. It is also advisable to bring a bottle of water or a soft drink with you.
For specific health problems it is advised that a private assessment is taken, after which an individual exercise prescription will be made. Private work is extremely beneficial as you are working on your own individual needs under close supervision.
