Why might I go to a chiropractor?*

The first thing that may spring to mind is that "chiropractors treat backs" - which they certainly do very successfully - but today's chiropractors also diagnose and treat other musculoskeletal disorders as well as a number of other conditions.

Chiropractors mainly treat:

You may also see an improvement in neck-related headaches.

What is chiropractic?*

"Chiropractic is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal manipulation or adjustment".
(World Federation of Chiropractic, 1999).

By restoring normal function to the musculoskeletal system chiropractors can play a major part in relieving disorders, and any accompanying pain or discomfort, arising from accidents, stress, lack of exercise, poor posture, illness and the everyday wear and tear that happens to all of us.

What will happen on my first visit?

The chiropractor will take a full case history regarding your general health background as well as details of your symptoms. He will then conduct a series of tests looking at your flexibility, posture and movement.

This will help in assessing and analysing your particular problem.

The chiropractor will then talk through the diagnosis and a treatment plan with you and answer any questions.

How often will I need treatment?

Each person is different in the nature of their problem and therefore the number of treatments required depends on the individual. Once the chiropractor has diagnosed your condition he will talk through a treatment plan with you.

A treatment plan would normally consist of a series of visits, initially once or twice a week (depending on the individual and their response to the treatment). Some conditions may respond more quicky and thus require less frequent treatment, whereas with some patients the effects are more subtle and they may need treatment over several months.
