What is Bowen?

The Bowen Technique is a soft tissue remedial therapy, named after its innovator Tom Bowen. The technique involves the therapist using fingers or thumbs to move over muscle, ligament tendon and fascia in various parts of the body. The work is very subtle, relaxing and gentle involving no hard or prolonged pressure.

Why might I go to a Bowen Therapist?

Bowen treatment can help with:

The Bowen Technique aims to balance the whole person, not just the symptoms. The Bowen treatment is suitable for adults and children, including newborn babies and the elderly.

What will happen on my first visit?

During your first visit a full consultation including medical history of yourself will be discussed.

Most of the work can be performed through light clothing, however some moves are difficult to perform through thicker material such as jeans or winter skirts.

The therapist will use thumbs or fingers to make a series of precise, rolling-type moves over muscle. During the treatment there are a series of short breaks where the patient is left resting to allow their body to respond to the gentle moves that have been performed. The rest period is an important part of the treatment and gives the body time to make the subtle and fine adjustments, which help to re-balance, relieve tension and reduce pain. It is these features which make the Bowen Technique unique.

How often will I need treatment?

Each treatment takes 40 minutes - 1 hour. A course of three consecutive weekly treatments, 7 to 10 days apart, is recommended to feel full benefits of Bowen. Some people use the Bowen Technique as a means of stress management and health maintenance, seeing their therapist regularly 2-4 times a year.
